There is nothing that has as great an impact on your life and good health as good ionized alkaline water and there is nothing more difficult to find! Why? Because so few health stores make ionized water available --- you need to make it yourself. That’s where the right water ionizers come in.

SO WHAT IS AN ALKALINE WATER IONIZER?

The glaical water they drink is also alkaline, meaning it is above a 7 pH. On a pH scale, anything below a 7pH is considered acidic and has an oxidizing effect on what it comes in contact with. For example, acidic water rusts metal. Anything above a 7pH is considered alkaline, and has an antioxidizing effect of what it comes in contact with!
For your reference, tap water generally has a pH of 5.5 – 6.5, acidic! So does bottled water (even the expensive, big name varieties). Over time drinking water like this will rust your body, leading to a build up of acid, which are the precursors to any adult onset disease from cancer to arthritis.
So, alkalinity and antioxidant levels are very important to water. Unfortunately, most of us don’t live near glacial streams. Even if you bottle glacial stream water, it’s not very good by the time it reaches you. Water needs to be energized by the sun and by movement to keep an alkaline chemical structure. When you bottle it and it sits around for a month, it’s pretty dead by the time it reaches you.
Tap water has the same problem. Our tap water sits around in holding tanks, where it loses its structure. What’s worse is it is then contaminated with flouride, chlorine, and other substances toxic to our bodies.
Most Americans know enough about water to at least filter out these contaminants. However, most of us don’t know anything about revitalizing water, bringing back it’s alkaline chemical structure and it’s natural antioxidant level.
That’s where a water ionizer comes in. A water ionizer is about the size of a bread box and sits on your counter or installs underneathe your sink. The electrolysis chamber is usually three or five titanium plates coated with platinum or white gold. Two plates are negatively charged, three plates are positively charged. Water with different pH levels have different uses. For example, plants love water at about a 6.0 pH, it helps them with their photosynthesis and you will see improved growth, health, and if you have a garden, you will see greated yields of your favorite vegetables. It just so happens that garden pests hate strong acidic water. If you spray strong acidic water on the leaves, the pest will stay away.

Strong alkaline water, at a 10pH, is great for cooking. If you soak your meat or fish in strong alkaline water the fat will be dissolved and the acid neutralized, leaving you tender, soft meat that is much healthier for you. Same thing for cooking rice, alkaline water will cook it without damaging the grain, leaving soft, moist rice that’s full of flavor. Acid water breaks down the nutrients in vegetables so if you start steaming and boiling them in strong alkaline water, the nutrients will be preserved, and your body will be happier.
When the quality of the food coming into your body is of higher quality than the tissue that the body is made of, the body begins to discard the lower grade materials and tissues and makes room for the superior materials that make new and healthier tissue. So, by improving the quality of your food and water with a ionized water, you will improve the quality of your own body!

WHY DRINK ALKALINE IONIZED WATER?

Whenever we attempt to determine whether there is life as we know it on Mars or other planets, scientists first seek to establish whether or not water is present. Why? Because life on earth totally depends on water.
A High percentage of living things, both plant and animal are found in water. All life on earth is thought to have arisen from water. The bodies of all living organisms are composed largely of water. About 70 to 90 percent of all organic matter is water.
The chemical reactions in all plants and animals that support life take place in a water medium . Water not only provides the medium to make these life sustaining reactions possible, but water itself is often an important reactant or product of these reactions. In short, the chemistry of life is water chemistry.
Water, the universal solvent
Water is a universal, superb solvent due to the marked polarity of the water molecule and its tendency to form hydrogen bonds with other molecules. One water molecule, expressed with the chemical symbol H2O, consists of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.
Standing alone, the hydrogen atom contains one positive proton at its core with one negative electron revolving around it in a three-dimensional shell. Oxygen, on the other hand, contains 8 protons in its nucleus with 8 electrons revolving around it. This is often shown in chemical notation as the letter O surrounded by eight dots representing 4 sets of paired electrons.
The single hydrogen electron and the 8 electrons of oxygen are the key to the chemistry of life because this is where hydrogen and oxygen atoms combine to form a water molecule, or split to form ions.
Hydrogen tends to ionize by losing its single electron and form single H+ ions, which are simply isolated protons since the hydrogen atom contains no neutrons. A hydrogen bond occurs when the electron of a single hydrogen atom is shared with another electronegative atom such as oxygen that lacks an electron.
Polarity of water molecules
In a water molecule, two hydrogen atoms are covalently bonded to the oxygen atom. But because the oxygen atom is larger than the hydrogen's, its attraction for the hydrogen's electrons is correspondingly greater so the electrons are drawn closer into the shell of the larger oxygen atom and away from the hydrogen shells. This means that although the water molecule as a whole is stable, the greater mass of the oxygen nucleus tends to draw in all the electrons in the molecule including the shared hydrogen electrons giving the oxygen portion of the molecule a slight electronegative charge.
The shells of the hydrogen atoms, because their electrons are closer to the oxygen, take on a small electropositive charge. This means water molecules have a tendency to form weak bonds with water molecules because the oxygen end of the molecule is negative and the hydrogen ends are positive.
A hydrogen atom, while remaining covalently bonded to the oxygen of its own molecule, can form a weak bond with the oxygen of another molecule. Similarly, the oxygen end of a molecule can form a weak attachment with the hydrogen ends of other molecules. Because water molecules have this polarity, water is a continuous chemical entity.
These weak bonds play a crucial role in stabilizing the shape of many of the large molecules found in living matter. Because these bonds are weak, they are readily broken and re-formed during normal physiological reactions. The disassembly and re-arrangement of such weak bonds is in essence the chemistry of life.
To illustrate water's ability to break down other substances, consider the simple example of putting a small amount of table salt in a glass of tap water.
With dry salt (NaCl) the attraction between the electropositive sodium (Na+) and electronegative chlorine (Cl-) atoms of salt is very strong until it is placed in water.
After salt is placed in water, the attraction of the electronegative oxygen of the water molecule for the positively charged sodium ions, and the similar attraction of the electropositive hydrogen ends of the water molecule for the negatively charged chloride ions, are greater than the mutual attraction between the outnumbered Na+ and Cl- ions. In water the ionic bonds of the sodium chloride molecule are broken easily because of the competitive action of the numerous water molecules.
As we can see from this simple example, even the delicate configuration of individual water molecules enables them to break relatively stronger bonds by converging on them.
This is why we call water the universal solvent. It is a natural solution that breaks the bonds of larger, more complex molecules. This is the chemistry of life on earth, in water and on land.
Oxidation-reduction reactions
Basically, reduction means the addition of an electron (e-), and its converse, oxidation means the removal of an electron. The addition of an electron, reduction, stores energy in the reduced compound. The removal of an electron, oxidation, liberates energy from the oxidized compound. Whenever one substance is reduced, another is oxidized.
To clarify these terms, consider any two molecules, A and B, for example.
When molecules A and B come into contact, here is what happens:
B grabs an electron from molecule A.
Molecule A has been oxidized because it has lost an electron.
The net charge of B has been reduced because it has gained a negative electron (e-).
In biological systems, removal or addition of an electron constitutes the most frequent mechanism of oxidation-reduction reactions. These oxidation-reduction reactions are frequently called redox reactions.
Acids and Bases
An acid is a substance that increases the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) in water. A base is a substance that decreases the concentration of hydrogen ions, in other words, increasing the concentration of hydroxide ions OH-.
The degree of acidity or alkalinity of a solution is measured in terms of a value known as pH, which is the negative logarithm of the concentration of hydrogen ions:
pH = 1/log[H+] = -log[H+]
What is pH?
On the pH scale, which ranges from 0 on the acidic end to 14 on the alkaline end, a solution is neutral if its pH is 7. At pH 7, water contains equal concentrations of H+ and OH- ions. Substances with a pH less than 7 are acidic because they contain a higher concentration of H+ ions. Substances with a pH higher than 7 are alkaline because they contain a higher concentration of OH- than H+. The pH scale is a log scale so a change of one pH unit means a tenfold change in the concentration of hydrogen ions.
Importance of balancing pH
Living things are extremely sensitive to pH and function best (with certain exceptions, such as certain portions of the digestive tract) when solutions are nearly neutral. Most interior living matter (excluding the cell nucleus) has a pH of about 6.8.
Blood plasma and other fluids that surround the cells in the body have a pH of 7.2 to 7.3. Numerous special mechanisms aid in stabilizing these fluids so that cells will not be subject to appreciable fluctuations in pH. Substances which serve as mechanisms to stabilize pH are called buffers. Buffers have the capacity to bond ions and remove them from solution whenever their concentration begins to rise. Conversely, buffers can release ions whenever their concentration begins to fall. Buffers thus help to minimize the fluctuations in pH.
This is an important function because many biochemical reactions normally occurring in living organisms either release or use up ions.
Oxygen: Too much of a good thing?
Oxygen is essential to survival. It is relatively stable in the air, but when too much is absorbed into the body it can become active and unstable and has a tendency to attach itself to any biological molecule, including molecules of healthy cells. The chemical activity of these free radicals is due to one or more pairs of unpaired electrons.
About 2% of the oxygen we normally breathe becomes active oxygen, and this amount increases to approximately 20% with aerobic exercise.
Such free radicals with unpaired electrons are unstable and have a high oxidation potential, which means they are capable of stealing electrons from other cells. This chemical mechanism is very useful in disinfectants such as hydrogen peroxide and ozone which can be used to sterilize wounds or medical instruments. Inside the body these free radicals are of great benefit due to their ability to attack and eliminate bacteria, viruses and other waste products.
Active Oxygen in the body
Problems arise, however, when too many of these free radicals are turned loose in the body where they can also damage normal tissue.
Putrefaction sets in when microbes in the air invade the proteins, peptides, and amino acids of eggs, fish and meat.
The result is an array of unpleasant substances such as:
• Hydrogen sulfide
• Ammonia
• Histamines
• Indoles
• Phenols
• Scatoles
These substances are also produced naturally in the digestive tract when we digest food, resulting in the unpleasant odor evidenced in feces. Putrefaction of spoiled food is caused by microbes in the air; this natural process is duplicated in the digestive tract by intestinal microbes. All these waste products of digestion are pathogenic, that is, they can cause disease in the body.
Hydrogen sulfide and ammonia are tissue toxins that can damage the liver. Histamines contribute to allergic disorders such as atopic dermatitis, urticaria (hives) and asthma. Indoles and phenols are considered carcinogenic.
Because waste products such as hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, histamines, phenols and indoles are toxic, the body's defense mechanisms try to eliminate them by releasing neutrophils (a type of leukocyte, or white corpuscle). These neutrophils produce active oxygen, oddball oxygen molecules that are capable of scavenging disintegrating tissues by gathering electrons from the molecules of toxic cells.
Problems arise, however, when too many of these active oxygen molecules, or free radicals, are produced in the body. They are extremely reactive and can also attach themselves to normal, healthy cells and damage them genetically. These active oxygen radicals steal electrons from normal, healthy biological molecules. This electron theft by active oxygen oxidizes tissue and can cause disease.
Because active oxygen can damage normal tissue, it is essential to scavenge this active oxygen from the body before it can cause disintegration of healthy tissue. If we can find an effective method to block the oxidation of healthy tissue by active oxygen, then we can attempt to prevent disease.
Antioxidants block dangerous oxidation
One way to protect healthy tissue from the ravages of oxidation caused by active oxygen is to provide free electrons to active oxygen radicals, thus neutralizing their high oxidation potential and preventing them from reacting with healthy tissue.
Research on the link between diet and cancer is far from complete, but some evidence indicates that what we eat may affect our susceptibility to cancer. Some foods seem to help defend against cancer, others appear to promote it.
Much of the damage caused by carcinogenic substances in food may come about because of an oxidation reaction in the cell. In this process, an oddball oxygen molecule may damage the genetic code of the cell.
Some researchers believe that substances that prevent oxidation -- called ANTIOXIDANTS -- can block the damage.
This leads naturally to the theory that the intake of natural antioxidants could be an important aspect of the body's defense against cancer. Substances that some believe inhibit cancer include vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, selenium, and gluthione (an amino acid).
These substances are reducing agents. They supply electrons to free radicals and block the interaction of the free radical with normal tissue.
How we can avoid illness?
As we mentioned earlier, the presence of toxic waste products such as hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, histamines, indoles, phenols and scatoles impart an offensive odor to human feces. In the medical profession, it is well known that patients suffering from hepatitis and cirrhosis pass particularly odoriferous stools.
Excessively offensive stools caused by the presence of toxins are indicators of certain diseases, and the body responds to the presence of these toxins by producing neutrophil leukocytes to release active oxygen in an attempt to neutralize the damage to organs that can be caused by such waste products. But when an excess amount of such active oxygen is produced, it can damage healthy cells as well as neutralize toxins. This leads us to the conclusion that we can minimize the harmful effect of these active oxygen radicals by reducing them with an ample supply of electrons.
Water, the natural solution
There is no substitute for a healthy balanced diet, especially rich in antioxidant materials such as vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, and other foods that are good for us. However, these substances are not the best source of free electrons that can block the oxidation of healthy tissue by active oxygen.
Water treated by electrolysis to increase its reduction potential is the best solution to the problem of providing a safe source of free electrons to block the oxidation of normal tissue by free oxygen radicals. We believe that reduced water, water with an excess of free electrons to donate to active oxygen, is the best solution because:
The reduction potential of water can be dramatically increased over other antioxidants in food or vitamin supplements.
The molecule weight of reduced water is low, making it fast acting and able to reach all tissues of the body in a very short time.
What is IONIZED WATER?
Ionized water is the product of mild electrolysis which takes place in the ionized water unit. The production of ionized water, its properties, and how it works in the human body are described in the next section.
Ionized water is treated tap water that has not only been filtered, but has also been reformed in that it provides reduced water with a large mass of electrons that can be donated to active oxygen in the body to block the oxidation of normal cells.

In order to fully understand ionized water, we must first look at regular tap water....
Tap water: What it is and isn't
Normal tap water, for example, with a pH of 7 is approximately neutral on the pH scale of 0 to 14. When measured with an ORP (oxidation potential) meter its redox potential is approximately +400 to +500 mV.
Because it has a positive redox potential, it is apt to acquire electrons and oxidize other molecules. Reduced Ionized Water, on the other hand, has a negative redox potential of approximately -250 to -350 mV. This means it has a large mass of electrons ready to donate to electron-thieving active oxygen.
Before discussing the properties of Ionized Water further, let's take a look at what happens inside an Ionized Water producing unit.
How an IONIZED WATER Unit works
The Ionized Water unit, slightly taller and thicker than a large dictionary on end, is an electrical appliance connected to your kitchen water supply to perform electrolysis on tap water before you drink it or use it in the kitchen for cooking or cleaning.
A special attachment re-directs tap water out of the faucet through a plastic hose into the Ionized Water unit. Inside the Ionized Water unit, the water is first filtered through activated charcoal. Next, the filtered water passes into an electrolysis chamber equipped with a platinum-coated titanium electrode where electrolysis takes place.
Cations, positive ions, gather at the negative electrodes to create cathodic water (reduced water). Anions, negatively charged ions, gather at the positive electrode to make anodic water (oxidized water).
Through electrolysis, reduced water not only gains an excess amount of electrons (e-), but the cluster of H 2O seem to be reduced in size from about 10 to 13 molecules per cluster to 5 to 6 molecules per cluster.
The reduced water comes out of the faucet, and the oxidized water comes out of a separate hose leading into the sink. You can use the reduced water for drinking or cooking. The oxidation potential of the oxidized water makes it a good sterilizing agent, ideal for washing hands, cleaning food or kitchen utensils, and treating minor wounds.

Redox potential comparison
After electrolysis of the water inside the Ionized Water unit, reduced water comes out of the cathodic side and oxidized water comes out of the anodic side. Compare these measurements of these three types of water: tap water before electrolysis, the reduced water, and the oxidized water.
Redox potential, not pH, is the crucial factor
Traditionally we have judged the properties of water from the standpoint of pH, in other words whether water is acidic or alkaline. According to Dr. Yoshiaki Matsuo PhD., the inventor of the Ionized Water unit, "In my opinion, redox potential is more important than pH. The importance of pH is over emphasized. For example, the average pH of blood is 7.4 and acidosis or alkalosis are defined according to deviation within the range of 7.4 +- 0.005. But nothing has been discussed about ORP, or oxidation-reduction potential."
The pH of tap water is about pH 7, or neutral. When tap water is electrolyzed into Ionized Water, its reduced water has a pH of about 9 and the oxidized water a pH of about 4. Even if you make alkaline water of pH 9 by adding sodium hydroxide or make acidic water of pH 3 by adding hydrogen chloride, you will find very little change in the ORP values of the two waters. On the other hand, when you divide tap water with electrolysis you can see the ORP fluctuate by as much as +- 1,000 mV. By electrolysis we can obtain reduced water with negative potential that is good for the body.

What IONIZED WATER Does
The Ionized Water unit produces two kinds of water with different redox potentials, one with a high reduction potential and the other with a high oxidation potential.
Reduced Water
When taken internally, the reduced Ionized Water with its redox potential of -250 to -350 mV readily donates its electrons to oddball oxygen radicals and blocks the interaction of the active oxygen with normal molecules.
A biological molecule (BM) remains intact and undamaged.
Undamaged biological molecules are less susceptible to infection and disease. Ionized Water gives up an extra electron and reduces the active oxygen (AO), thus rendering it harmless. The AO is reduced without damaging surrounding biological molecules. Substances which have the ability to counteract active oxygen by supplying electrons are called scavengers. Reduced water, therefore, can be called scavenging water.
When taken internally, the effects of reduced water are immediate. Ionized Water inhibits excessive fermentation in the digestive tract by reducing indirectly metabolites such as hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, histamines, indoles, phenols and scatoles, resulting in a cleaner stool within days after reduced water is taken on a regular basis.
In 1965, the Ministry of Welfare of Japan announced that reduced water obtained from electrolysis can prevent abnormal fermentation of intestinal microbes.
Oxidized Water
Oxidized water with its redox potential of +700 to +800 mV is an oxidizing agent that can withdraw electrons from bacteria and kill them. The oxidized water from the Ionized Water unit can be used to clean hands, kitchen utensils, fresh vegetables and fruits, and to sterilize cutting boards and minor wounds. Tests have shown that oxidized water can be used effectively to treat athlete's foot, minor burns, insect bites, scratches, and so on.
Dr. Yoshiaki Matsuo, Vice Director of the Water Institute of Japan, has developed another apparatus capable of producing hyper-oxidized water with a redox potential of +1,050 mV or more, and a pH lower than 2.7. Tests have shown that this hyper oxidized water can quickly destroy MRSA (Methecillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus).
Although hyper-oxidized water is a powerful sterilizing agent, it won't harm the skin. In fact, it can be used to heal. Hyper-oxidized water has proven effective in Japanese hospitals in the treatment of bedsores and operative wounds with complicated infections.
But perhaps the most exciting future application of hyper-oxidized water is in the field of agriculture where it has been used effectively on plants to kill fungi and other plant diseases. Hyper-oxidized water is non-toxic, so agricultural workers can apply it without wearing special protective equipment because there is no danger of skin or respiratory damage.
An added benefit of using hyper-oxidized water to spray plants is that there is no danger to the environment caused by the accumulation of toxic chemicals in the ground.
Ionized Water is superior to an Antioxidant Diet...
Today we read much about correct dieting principles and paying attention to what we eat in order to stay healthy. This is a sensible practice, but it is surprising that many of us don't realize that the bulk of what eat is composed of water. Vegetables and fruits are 90% water; fish and meat are about 70% water as well.
Even advocates of the importance of vitamin C in diet staples have to admit that its potency, namely, the redox potential of this important vitamin, rapidly diminishes with age and preparation for the dining table. Carbohydrates, the main consistent of vegetables and fruit, has a molecular weight of 180 whereas water has a much lower molecular weight of 18.
Ionized Water, with its low molecular weight and high reduction potential, makes it a superior scavenging agent of active oxygen. But electrolysis inside the Ionized Water unit not only charges the reduced water with electrons, it also reduces the size of reduced water molecule clusters.
NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) analysis reveals that tap water and well water consists of clusters of 10 to 13 H2 0 molecules.
Electrolysis of water in the Ionized Water unit reduces these clusters to about half their normal size -- 5 to 6 water molecules per cluster.
As the graph shows, the NMR signal that measures cluster size by line width at half-amplitude shows 65 Hz for reduced water and 133 Hz for tap water, revealing that the reduced water clusters are approximately half the size of tap water clusters.
This is why Ionized Water is more readily absorbed by the body than untreated tap water. Ionized Water quickly permeates the body and blocks the oxidation of biological molecules by donating its abundant electrons to active oxygen, enabling biological molecules to replace themselves naturally without damage caused by oxidation that can cause diseases.
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
The Upstream and Downstream Theory
Prevent disease at the source
According to Dr. Hidemitsu Hayashi, Director of the Water Institute of Japan, "To eliminate the pollutants in a large stream that is contaminated at its source, we must work on the problems upstream at the headwaters -- the source of the pollution -- not downstream where we can only try to treat the evidence of damage caused by the pollution. Ionized Water's contribution to preventive medicine is essentially upstream treatment."

According to our model, we consider the digestive tract upstream where we intake water and food. Although many people today in developed countries are growing more skeptical about what they eat, they tend to concentrate more on what the food contains rather than the metabolized products of foods in the digestive tract.

For example, consider the typical balanced diet of meat and vegetables. Meat protein is metabolized into amines while nitrates from fertilizers used to grow vegetables metabolize into nitrites in the digestive tract. These amines and nitrites combine to form nitrosamine, a recognized carcinogen.
We've already discussed that odoriferous feces are evidence of excessive fermentation in the digestive tract, so reduced water performs a very important function upstream in the digestive tract by reducing this excessive fermentation as evidenced by cleaner stools within days of starting a steady regimen of reduced water.

Downstream
Downstream from the digestive tract, starting at the liver, reduced water quickly enters the liver and other organs due to, first, its lower molecular weight, and, secondly, the size of its clusters. At tissue sites throughout the body, reduced water with its safe, yet potent reduction potential readily donates its passenger electrons freely to active oxygen and neutralizes them so they cannot damage the molecules of healthy cells. Normal cells are protected from the electron thievery of active oxygen and allowed to grow, mature, function and regenerate without interference from rogue, oddball oxygen radicals which tend to steal the electrons from the molecules of normal, healthy biological molecules.
The Water Boom
We are now in the midst of a water boom.
In Japan and other countries consumers are buying various kinds of bottled and canned water even though water is one of our most abundant vital resources.
Research data reveals that mineral waters have an ORP of +200 mV, slightly lower than the +400 mV measured for ordinary tap water. We can say that at least mineral water is marginally better than tap water from the viewpoint of ORP.
Compared to any processed water for sale, however, Ionized Water with its reduction potential of -250 to -600 mV is beyond comparison due to its ability to scavenge active oxygen radicals.

Understanding pH and ORP in Alkaline Water
The basics of pH / ORP alteration in ionized water
Ionization alters water in two significant and measurable ways: pH and ORP. These alterations to water are what make it very different from other waters you may drink.
pH
pH stands for "potential hydrogen" and is a measurement that provides an indication of the level of hydrogen in a substance. It is measured by the pH scale. Proper body pH is an Important factor in good health. To learn more about pH and your health, get a free report here.
ORP
The other way an ionizer alters the water is in ORP. This stands for Oxidation Reduction Potential (also known as "Redox") Most leading water researchers from Asia agree that in ionized water the elevated pH is good, but that ORP is more important. Alteration to the ORP is what causes the microclustering, antioxidant and oxygenating effects.
ORP is a "potential" energy that is stored and ready to be put to work. It's not necessarily working, but we know that the energy is there and we can measure it. Another way to look at this potential might be to look at pressure. If you blow up a balloon, there is air pressure inside. As long as the balloon is closed, the pressure remains and can be measured. When released, this Potential energy becomes kinetic energy.
In electrical terms, potential energy can be measured. When we use the term "potential" in describing ORP, we are actually talking about electrical potential as expressed in millivolts. This potential is measured in water with an ORP meter. What you measure is the very slight voltage in water. We are actually measuring the presence of oxidizing or reducing agents by their specific electrical charge, thus Oxidation Reduction "Potential". High pH water has More "reducing" agents (-ORP) and low pH water has more oxidizing agents (+ORP).
Oxidation is what turns an apple brown after it is cut or causes metal to rust. Rust weakens metal and signifies the deterioration of the apple. The process of oxidation “steals” electrons from the surface being oxidized. When we measure a something’s oxidizing potential, it is expressed in +ORP and measures the concentration of ions or oxidizing agents.
A "reducing" agent is simply something that inhibits or slows the process of oxidation. The reducing agent does this by "donating" an electron. When we measure a solution's oxidation reduction potential, it is expressed in terms of ORP and measures the concentration of ions or reducing agents. The ORP of most tap water in North America is between +200 to +600mv, ie. these waters are oxidizing agents. High pH ionized water demonstrates a –ORP and so is a reducing agent or "antioxidant". Most bottled waters are acidic (low pH) --many are quite acidic -- and also have higher ORPs (over +400mv).
Understanding the Crucial Variables in Performance
pH and ORP alteration is a highly variable and depends primarily on three factors:
1. The source water and its natural mineral content – water varies widely in this respect
2. The voltage applied to the water during electrolysis
3. The flow rate through the ionizer’s water cell
These variables have a dramatic effect on pH and ORP.
An ionizer works primarily on the mineral content in the water. It is the dissolved mineral content (referred to as TDS) which creates the pathway for the “ionization” (or more correctly electrolysis) to occur. Water without mineral content or TDS, like reverse osmosis or distilled water, will not conduct the current and therefore can not be "ionized". This first variable is the most crucial to performance. Tap waters vary widely in the dissolved mineral content. The higher the mineral content ("harder" water) the higher the levels of pH and ORP alteration an ionizer can achieve; the lower the mineral content ("softer water") the lower levels of pH and ORP alteration. The importance of this variable can not be emphasized enough.
The heart of an ionizer is the water cell which contains the electrodes. The electrodes are what deliver the current and creates the “ionization”. We control the voltage conducted through the electrodes and then to the water by selecting the different "Alkaline" settings on an ionizer. The higher the Alkaline setting (or voltage), the more alteration you will achieve in pH and ORP. Effective conductivity is the primary determinant – not electrode size - of effective delivery of the current or voltage into the water needed to create electrolysis. Do not be fooled by the claim some manufacturers make that larger electrodes will necessarily deliver better performance. Generally the larger electrodes have poorer conductivity – so they have to be larger.
The flow rate through the machine determines how long the water is actually in contact with the electrodes receiving the voltage and the effects of electrolysis. If your flow is fast (say you could fill a quart or liter in 15 seconds) then the water is not processing very long and not receiving much alteration. Conversely, with a slow the flow rate (say the same quart or liter took 60 seconds) the water is in the chamber in contact with the electrodes longer and will receive more alteration. You can always achieve higher pH and ORP readings with reduced flow rates. So controlling the flow is an important variable in performance.
On most ionizers you can only adjust the flow rate by using your faucet or tap. If your faucet is all the way "on" the water will process very fast through the machine. If your faucet is just barely on this reduces the flow and the water will process for much longer. With a fast flow rate you may only achieve slight alteration in pH and ORP, slow it down and you will get higher pH and better ORP. Simply put, speed it up, you get a less alteration; slow it down and you'll get more.
To illustrate this whole principle lets look at two very different tap waters and their effect on performance. Remember the crucial variable is the dissolved mineral content or TDS (total dissolved solids) which is measured in parts per million. This creates the pathway for the ionization to occur. In California the tap water tests at 385 - 501ppm of total dissolved solids. The tap water in Seattle tests at approximately 40 – 47ppm. You could test water from an ionizer in at a given setting and flow rate and you would get a certain result. You could test the exact same ionizer in another setting, without altering the setting or flow rate and you would get dramatically different results. Is it the ionizer? No. It is the water as the main variable in performance. There is much less pathway in Seattle’s water. To further illustrate variability, you could alter the voltage or flow rates through the ionizer in either Carlsbad or Seattle and you would get different results again.
Comparing ORP
Lastly, comparing ORP is a tricky business. Stating absolute values is impossible. Anyone who really knows and understands ionizers/ORP would agree. Anyone who states absolutes in performance reveals ignorance of the science. Further, pH and ORP are not tied to another. In other words you can measure ORP in two pH9 waters and get two very different readings. Another factor to consider when comparing ORP is the level of pH you will drink.
Water with a pH over about pH10 does not taste good to the vast majority of people. Japanese research states that the ideal range for drinking alkaline water is between pH8.5 and pH9.5. Given this, testing ORP at those levels is where the real bang for the buck is; ORP at a pH level one would actually drink. Therefore, the only salient way to compare ORP in ionizers is side-by-side, with the same source water and each machine set to achieve the same drinkable level of pH. If you drink pH9 then the ORP you get at pH9 is the effective ORP in the ionizer. Not some “absolute” or even extraordinarily high ORP.

Municipal Water
Drinking water is important however, putting poor quality water into your body can be worse than drinking no water at all. The biggest problem with municipal water is that it contains chlorine, which is an oxidant and a known carcinogen that can cause liver damage if consumed on a regular basis. Chlorine is a problem in your shower, too, because you are breathing chlorine gas as well as having it directly absorbed into your pores.
Most municipal companies also add fluoride to the water, especially in large cities. There are conflicting reports on fluoride. It’s supposed to help your teeth but some people are allergic to it. Some doctors don’t think it should be ingested at all. When it comes to chlorine, fluoride, and other contaminants in your water, our filters are the best on the market at filtration, removing everything to non-detectable levels. Mineral Content
The strength of your ionized water is directly affected by the amount of minerals in your water. The more minerals, the stronger the ionization. Stronger ionization means higher pH and lower ORP (oxygen reduction potential – the number of antioxidants in your water). Of course, the more antioxidants, the better because they clean the toxins from your body and keep your body clean.
Well Water
OK, we’ve covered municipal and ionized water, now let’s talk about well water. The two most common problems found in well water are hydrogen sulfide and high iron content. Hydrogen sulfide makes your water smell like rotten eggs, leading people to believe their water is undrinkable. It’s still drinkable but still it’s really nice to remove hydrogen sulfide just then same. The iron is caused by the well casing and sometimes corroded pipes in your house. Both hydrogen sulfide and iron are filtered out by the Biostone filter. The hydrogen sulfide is removed by the activated carbon filter while the iron is filtered by the resin portion of our filter. If your well is deep, over 150’, that is usually enough natural filtration not to be concerned about the water being contaminated. If your septic system is within 50’ of your well, you should run a bacteria test.
Hard Water

Just so you know, most people use salt based water softeners to decrease the calcium and magnesium in their water but there are magnetic water conditioners as well. They are salt and chemical free and de-gasify your water while also removing the scale. They are the ideal choice to go along with a water ionizer if you have hard water.

* Water is a natural solvent.

* Surface water supplies are generally low in dissolved minerals.

* pH is the measure of acidity of a water supply based on the hydrogen ion.
* Water with a pH below 7.0 is corrosive. Above is considered alkaline water.
How a Water Ionizer Works:
When you think of ionized water, think of it as mineral water. Minerals dissolved in water are present as ions. Because the minerals or ions in your water have an electrical charge, either positive or negative, the electrolyis chamber in our water ionizer takes advantage of this.
An electrolysis chamber in the water ionizer is filled with positive and negative cations, or electrodes. The cations that produce a positive current of electricity, attract and microcluster anions, which are the minerals with a negative charge. About Alkalinity
Sometimes confused with pH, it actually has nothing to do with pH level. Alkalinity is due to the presence of bicarbonate, carbonate, and hydrate ions. For our purposes, alkalinity consists of calcium and magnesium bicarbonate.
How a Water Softener Works
Water Softeners are cation exchangers meaning they will exchange, or pick up all positive ions (axions). The anions (negative ions) are not exchanged, or removed, by a water softener. So what a water softener is doing is removing the calcium and magnesium from your water while leaving the nitrates, sulfides, and chlorides alone. It replaces the positive ions with salt, depending on the model, sometimes a lot of salt.
The removal of the calcium and magnesium makes your softened water acidic and salty, so it isn’t good to drink. A water ionizer will filter the salt and alkalize the water at a hardness most beneficial to human consumption.
About the Hardness of Your Water
The minerals in your water are measured by grains per gallon (gpg) or parts per million (ppm). A grain is a unit of weight (7,000 grains = one pound). Parts per million is a finer measurement (17.1 ppm = one grain). More common minerals such as calcium and magnesium are measured in gpg. Minerals such as iron are present in lesser quantities and are measured in ppm.
Water hardness above 5 grains is considered for treatment. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, which tends to revert back to the solid state when water is heated. This solid material will form scale and will also combine with chemicals added to water such as detergents. The higher the hardness, the faster scale will form or the "harder" it is to produce suds for good cleaning action.
High hardness (10 grains and above) will shorten the life of water heaters, electric heating elements, and water using appliances like our ionizers!
So, the bottom line is that you need your water to be softer than 10 grains for it to work with our ionizers. Water softeners and water ionizers are thus very compatible. However, if you use an older salt water softener, your filter in your ionizer won’t last as long. An ideal situation would be a reduced salt softener and one of our ionizers or a water softener hooked up to a whole house filter that pre-filters the water prior to it going to our water ionizer.
About Reverse Osmosis
Reverse osmosis was originally designed to desalinate seawater. They create purified water by slamming water against an ultra-fine semi-permeable membrane that only allows a single molecule at a time to pass through, thus rejecting most contaminants. Unlike distillers, this process allows oxygen to pass through, so reverse osmosis water isn’t dead tasting. Typical units produce water drop by drop so they need a pressurized tank to store the result for fast access. RO machines are inefficient; they may take up to five liter of tap water to produce one clean liter and the membranes must be replaced by a qualified tradesperson.
The big problem with reverse osmosis water, just like distillers, is that they take all the minerals out of the water, leaving the water acidic. Acidic water takes on the properties of whatever it comes in contact with so when you drink it, it begins to claim your nutrients and minerals that your body is using to balance its pH and regulate itself.
About Distilled Water
Another form of filtration is called distilling. A distiller works by heating the water until it evaporates. As the water vaporizes, minerals, bacteria, and other substances are left behind. When the steam cools, the water condenses into relatively pure water.
One big complaint about distilled water is that it tastes flat. The reason for this is that the dissolved oxygen as well as the minerals have been removed from it. With the minerals missing, the water also becomes very acidic. Minerals are nature’s natural pH balancer. Our body uses them to regulate our pH and when you take them from water, it becomes acidic. Acidic water wants to take on the properties of whatever it comes in contact with so if you put it on metal, it begins to rust it. If you put it in your body, it begins to eat away at your natural minerals, eventually making your whole body acidic.
Distilling water is also not effective at removing chemicals which have a boiling point below that of water. Substances such as ammonia and trihalomethanes are carried over into the condensation chamber. If you remember from earlier, trihalomethanes are left over from chlorine and are reasonable for many cases of cancer, especially in the elderly.
Finally, distillers are slow and consume lots of energy. They produce about three liters of water per hour. A water ionizer and filter combination is a flow through unit with instant results.

Do I need any special fittings?
We have supplied Ionizing Water Filters to many hundreds of homes so far and have found no tap we could not fit.
How do I get my ordinary tap water once it's attached?
The diverter has a lever which swaps your water flow from tap water outlet to alkaline water outlet. It has an incorporated aerator for your tap water.
Can it go under my bench?
We have installed some Water Ionizers under the kitchen sink bench. There are even a couple installed in mobile vans for nomad Aquarius style customers.
Remember that it needs somewhere for the acid water to flow to. It can go into the dishwasher inlet on the S-bend, but it is valuable water and you'll probably want to keep it to use.

What can I use the acid water for?
The acid water is a 'free' bonus. It is excellent for all manner of skin complaint. We use it as an astringent face wash last thing at night, we fill the fountain with it and at last the fountain doesn't go green in 3 days, it's excellent for hair care, acne, sores, bench top sterilization and more. Hardly a week passes without a call from a client who has found a new use for it.
We collect it in the sink and after rinsing our dishes we dip them into the acid water to sterilize them before putting them away. We also put it onto our pot plants because it closely resembles rainwater.
Why does the KYK Harmony Water Ionizer 'split' the water into acid and alkaline?The 'splitting' of the inlet H2O is the proof that the Ionizer does what it says it does.
The process of splitting causes the following:
a. Approximately 70% of the H20 input is molecularly rearranged into OH-, or alkaline, negatively charged water.b. Approximately 30% of the input H2O is molecularly rearranged into HO, or acidic water.
Some companies sell units that just use magnets or magnetic rock to affect the water. Products that claim the benefits of water ionizers but do not electronically split the water will not hold the negative charge long enough for it to be of any real value, or will not be able to exert enough magnetic power to cause the water to become negatively charged. The water will reunite very quickly back into ordinary H2O.
What about these no-filter backwash systems?
There is only ONE backwash system made by a small Japanese company and promoted by an American company with the help of an advertising agency. Backwash systems come and go but have never caught on because they have never been able to match their claims.
Industry experts will tell you that even in commercial systems, backwashing is a risky hygiene decision simply because unfiltered water is used to back flush the filter, thereby compromising its cleanliness. Imagine the state of your sink, over the years, if you used hot water only (without scrubbing).
Extravagant claims have been made over the years about longevity using backwash, but in the systems we have tested, we have found that the effectiveness of the devices seems to diminish within as little as a couple of years.
The other problem of backwashing systems that 'emit' minerals is that no filter has ever been able to uniformly emit, leach or add minerals to output filtered water.
While they may emit beneficial added minerals when you purchase them, there is no guarantee that they will continue to do so, and the longevity claims make this even harder to substantiate. The longer all water filters work, the less efficiently they work.

Why do I need the KYK Harmony Water Ionizer? Can't I just drink regular water?
You certainly can, but if you're like us, you have never really got into the water habit because it was too much like a lead balloon. Ionized water from water ionizers is light water. It has a smaller molecular cluster and you can drink it all day.
You CAN just drink water and you will harvest some of the benefits we speak of, but it still can't penetrate your cells like alkaline, ionized water, and this is why ionized water with its bounty of negative oxygen ions is able to rid you of acid wastes in the cells. How do I know if I have acidosis or an acid-overloaded system?
Most westerners do. The pace of life, the state of our foods, the concentration of acid-producing items in our diet means that 99% of people are overloaded. You know that rare individual who seems calm all the time% It's a very good bet that he or she isn't acid overloaded.
You can use a litmus urine or saliva test to give you some idea of your acidity. This is not foolproof, however, because your body is always attempting to balance your acid and alkaline levels and could well be getting rid of a load of acid at the time of the test. Why does the KYK Harmony water ionizer filter leave some minerals in and not others?
The filter (depending on model) is a silver activated antibacterial charcoal filter. It filters to 0.01 microns, which, according to John Archer's book The Water You Drink filters out even viruses.
However it does not filter out minerals that are in solution because they won't stick to the carbon. Calcium being a suspended mineral, is removed by the filter.
We can, if we choose, add calcium to the inlet port on the top of the machine which is made for this purpose.
It's important to understand that our body's calcium levels are only ever changed to a maximum of 15% by dietary supplement.
The real loss is in the body leaching calcium from our bones to balance our excess acidity (70%). As your KYK Harmony water ionizer does its job and relieves your body's task of maintaining an alkaline balance, far less calcium would need to be leached from the bones.
